BCCI sets condition for Suryakumar Yadav's T20I return: 'He remains eligible if...'

Leading India cricket team">India cricket team">India cricket team">India cricket team">India’s historic title-winning campaign at the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup wasn’t enough for Suryakumar Yadav to keep his spot in the team as BCCI’s men’s cricket team selection committee dropped the star batter while also naming a new captain in Shreyas Iyer for the team’s post-world cup assignments. In a couple of months’ time, Suryakumar will turn 36 and with the next T20 World Cup in 2028, it may seem that a return to international cricket may be near impossible.

However, a report claims that the BCCI hasn’t closed the doors on Surya’s potential return to the national setup, but he will have to back his claim with truckloads of runs.

“Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs consistently in domestic cricket,” a news outlet quoted a BCCI source as saying.

Surya will have to return to domestic cricket where he represents Mumbai and besides remaining motivated to play international cricket, he will have to show excellent form to launch his comeback bid.

Last year, Surya failed to score a half-century in 19 innings. He though signalled a return to form during the New Zealand T20I series earlier this year with three half-centuries in five games and starting India’s T20 World Cup campaign with a match-winning 84*.

However, in the remaining eight matches of the marquee tournament, he mustered 158 runs including a duck in the final. In the IPL 2026 for Mumbai Indians, he managed 270 runs from 13 innings at a strike-rate of 147.54.

Under new captain Iyer, India have lost six of their last seven T20Is with one producing no result due to rain. The results have been blamed on the team’s failure to adapt to the conditions in Ireland and England.

India will switch to one-day mode from today, hoping for a positive result.
