Shreyas Iyer Becomes New Vice-Captain Of India's ODI Team

Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer on Saturday, October 4, was confirmed as the new vice-captain of India’s ODI team. He will be Shubman Gill’s deputy in the upcoming three-match series in Australia.

Iyer has played a total of 70 ODIs for Team India so far, and with the help of five centuries and 22 fifties, he has amassed a total of 2845 runs. His batting average in the 50-over format of the game is 48.22.

The news of Iyer’s promotion to the role of vice-captain was confirmed by the BCCI via tweet, after which chief selector Ajit Agarkar also addressed the media in Ahmedabad to confirm the news of the new role for the Mumbai-based batter.

Gill replaces Rohit

26-year-old Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma to become the new captain of Team India in ODIs. Gill will make his ODI captaincy debut for Team India on October 19 in Perth. Despite losing his job as the captain of India’s ODI team, Rohit is picked in the squad along with Virat Kohli.

Rohit played eight ODIs for Team India as captain in 2025 and managed to win all of them. In his last ODI as India captain, Rohit scored 76 runs against New Zealand in Dubai to help the Men in Blue win the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 on March 9.

Rohit’s record as ODI captain

Rohit led India in a total of 56 ODI matches from 2017 to 2025 and won 42 of them. Under his leadership, India won two Asia Cup titles (in 2018 and 2023) and one Champions Trophy in 2025. In addition to that, he also won 10 matches in a row as captain in the Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.

In 56 ODIs as captain of Team India, Rohit scored 2506 runs with a strike rate of 111.97. His highest ODI score as India captain is 208*. During his time as ODI captain, Rohit slammed five centuries and 17 fifties for the Men in Blue.

Iyer has been appointed as Gill's deputy for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia.
