Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is back home and recovering but is likely to be ruled out of the South Africa series, set to kick off in the last week of November. Iyer had suffered a laceration to spleen, after an impact injury on the rib cage while taking a diving catch in the third ODI in Sydney last month and stayed in Australia for some time before the medical clearance to travel. While Iyer is on the path to full fitness, the eventual time might be a bit more than initially anticipated.

As per the new report, Iyer, still needs time to be fit for international cricket and the selectors are constantly in touch with the player and the medical team, with respect to the 30-year-old's recovery and subsequent return to the national side. "He will take more time to be fully match fit and the board and selection committee doesn’t want to rush after his injury. He is doubtful for the South Africa ODI series,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying in the report.

On Monday, Iyer posted a picture of himself from the beachside, alongside a friend, looking happy and better, with the caption, "Sun's been a great therapy. Grateful to be back. Thanks for all the love and care."

Iyer got discharged from hospital on November 1 and the BCCI had offered its gratitude to Dr Koroush Haghighi in Australia and Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India to take the best possible care of the Indian team. "He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today.

"The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Koroush Haghighi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury. Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly," the BCCI statement dated November 1 read.

The three-match ODI series against South Africa, kicks off on November 30 in Ranchi, following the two Test matches in Kolkata and Guwahati. In Iyer's absence, the middle-order spot might open up for Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant.

India's ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is back home and recovering, however, his full recovery might take time.
