Ravi Shastri reveals India squad for ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, 4 surprise calls catch attention
The 2027 Cricket World Cup will be held in October / November 2027, hosted jointly by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The ICC has already announced the proposed format, and all the teams have got their preparations going for the greatest event in the 50-over format.
The last World Cup played was in India cricket team">India cricket team">India cricket team">India in 2023. Australia won in the final against the home side to lift the record sixth title.
Another team that has already begun its planning for the 2027 World Cup is India. They started well by winning the three one-day internationals against Afghanistan 3-0 in June. However, they then lost three one-day internationals to England 2-1.
The loss brought about many doubts over the combination in the Indian team and the squad selection. Shortly after the series ended, the former Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri also voiced his opinion in the matter and revealed the 15-man squad he would pick for India in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Shastri supports an in-form core with some new additions.
Ravi Shastri has also been part of the Indian set-up and is well aware of expectations when the team enters the arena. He was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team during 2017- 21 and was a part of many historic performances like winning two consecutive Border-Gavaskar Trophies in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21. In 2021, under his coaching, India also qualified for the World Test Championship final.
Shastri was part of India’s historic 1983 World Cup-winning team and continues to be one of the most respected voices as a commentator and analyst in the game of cricket.
After India's recent test series defeat to England, Shastri revealed his 15-man best World Cup team for 2027.
Here is the squad named by Ravi Shastri:
- Shubman Gill (c)
- Rohit Sharma
- Virat Kohli
- Shreyas Iyer
- KL Rahul
- Rishabh Pant
- Hardik Pandya
- Ravindra Jadeja
- Axar Patel
- Jasprit Bumrah
- Mohammed Siraj
- Mohammed Shami
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar
- Kuldeep Yadav
- Arshdeep Singh
Another element is the reliance on experience. Of the 15, ten players in Shastri's squad have played in an ODI World Cup before, indicating how he saw experienced players playing a big part in India's World Cup effort.
Meanwhile, he has also managed to find two new names. Only two players in the squad-Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh-have not played an ODI World Cup earlier. Their addition indicates that Shastri wants a team that combines experience and stability with promising, in-form cricketers.
There is still time for India. With more than two years to go for the tournament, they can try and test out many combinations and find a settled squad. The Indian team is also likely to play many ODI series before the World Cup to find the right balance.
With preparations underway, Shastri's proposed team has strengthened the urge to consider candidates for India's 2027 World Cup plans.
